The Hylton Collection: meet Claudia Hylton

There are moments when you come across an artist and you immediately feel it, not just the skill, but the presence. The Hylton Collection is exactly that kind of discovery, and we’re sharing it properly, with the story that gives the work its weight and its colour.

If you’re an art lover, you’ll recognise the confidence in the figures. If you’re shopping for gifts, you’ll recognise something else, a piece that feels considered, meaningful, and genuinely different. And for the whole of December 2025, you can explore the collection with 25% off using code HYLTON25.

A new public unveiling, why this collection is landing now

Claudia Hylton’s work has been private until now. Not because it wasn’t ready, but because the process was personal, and the practice was hers. When we discovered the work, it was obvious this wasn’t something to be kept in the background. This is a collection that deserves to be seen, lived with, talked about, and gifted. That’s why we’re introducing the Hylton Collection as a public release through Interlace Creative Print, with care for the artist, and for the people who will connect with it.

Meet Claudia Hylton, the story behind the work

Claudia Hylton is a Black British urban artist, born in Yorkshire in 1978. Her biological mother had left the Caribbean to start a new life in the UK, and when Claudia was born unexpectedly, her mother did not have the resources to raise a baby while settling into a new world. Claudia was placed for adoption.

At that time, there were very few Black babies in Yorkshire. Claudia was adopted by a white couple who raised her as their own, the people she calls Mum and Dad, and she grew up in Northern England with an identity shaped by contrast, belonging, and resilience. This mosaic identity hearkens back to a connection to black origins and people which forms the basis of a recurrent and pervasive theme throughout her artistic journey.

As a teenager, Claudia attended theatre school in Leeds. Performance was part of her early world, but visual art was always there too, not as a hobby, but as a necessary way of expressing what words could not always hold.

As an adult, Claudia left Northern England to pursue a performing career. She worked as a dancer before settling in London, and it is hard to look at her figures without sensing that background, the understanding of movement, the tension in a pose, the flow of fabric, the pause before a shift.

For several years, Claudia lived with anxiety and short-term memory loss. During that period, she leaned into visual art as a way to process and manage what she was carrying. The work became a grounding practice. Until now, it stayed private. The Hylton Collection is the moment it steps into public view.

Inspirations, jazz, improvisation, identity, and nature

One of the most beautiful threads running through Claudia’s work is jazz, not just as music, but as a way of thinking. Jazz is colour evoked through vivid sonorities, tonal moods, rhythm, and freedom. It is a form built on mercurial improvisations, and you feel that in the way Claudia’s pieces move. They do not sit still. They carry momentum.

Alongside that is her pull toward the expression of strong Black female faces and bodies, presented with presence and intensity. Sometimes the styling feels urban and contemporary. Sometimes it shifts into something more fantastical, where nature arrives as wild growth, uncontained leaves, and unexpected colour. A kind of dreamscape pushing through the everyday.

Her process is free-flowing. It draws on fast-moving thoughts and mental associations, and the result is work that feels alive, not over-polished, not sterile, but expressive and full of energy.

“Whispers of Earth” perfectly depicts dynamic movement and colour, a signature thread throughout the collection.

What you’ll see in the collection, and how to choose a piece that feels personal

The simplest way to describe the Hylton Collection is this: it’s vivid, it’s confident, and it carries emotion without needing to shout. You’ll see:

● Strong female forms that feel powerful and unapologetic

● Bold colour that lifts a room and changes the mood of a space

● Urban and nature elements together, like identity and environment meeting in one frame

● Music and movement coming through in posture, rhythm, and flow

If you’re choosing for your own home, think about what you want the piece to do. Do you want calm with a bright edge, a statement portrait, or something that feels like motion captured mid-breath?

If you’re choosing it as a gift, you do not need to be an art expert. Pick for feeling. Colour that matches their space is helpful, but a piece that matches their energy is better. There exists a varied selection of themes to suit many tastes.

“Melody in Red”, a nod to sound and improvisation through its dynamic forms.

“Wings of Dawn”, an interesting juxtaposition of calm, colour and presence.
